Naturally mined gold is yellow, yet we often see white gold and various shades of yellow gold in gold jewelry products.

100% pure gold is soft, easily scratched and highly malleable; therefore jewelers mix gold with other metals, giving the resulting product stronger properties, durability and a finer shine.

Gold by itself would not make a suitable gold jewelry product, but gold alloyed with other semi-precious metals such as copper, silver, zinc, nickel and palladium ensures a fine gold jewelry product that will last for a life time.

The purest form of gold in jewelry is 24 karat gold and is a deep shade of orange yellow. Adding copper (a reddish metal) to gold results in additional red tones in the resulting jewelry product. Silver, zinc nickel, palladium and other grayish colored metals result in a paler gold color.

Of course the more foreign metal added to gold increases the array of colors possible. This means that gold jewelry products with less karat weight of gold may vary more in color than the jewelry products containing higher karat weights.

Ten and 14 karat gold jewelry alloyed with stronger metals are actually often more durable than items made with 18 and 24 karat gold, making these jewelry products very suitable for constant every day wear.

Yellow gold remains the most popular for gold jewelry products. However, many women prefer white gold jewelry since it can also be worn with silver jewelry products.

Gold jewelry is also found in two toned gold (yellow gold and white gold combined in the jewelry piece) and tri-color gold (yellow gold, rose gold and white gold). These various shades of gold provide versatile looks in today's jewelry products.
